Wednesday Devo: But he answered, "It is written, "'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" - Matthew 4:4
When we see leaves on the trees begin to turn colors, it means one thing, they are dying. As the amount of light in a day begins to shorten, leading up to autumn, the green begins to leave. Despite their beautiful appearance, eventually, the leaves will fall.
Jesus tells us that we can only live by His Father's Word alone. Our bodies need physical bread to live, but for our spiritual life, we need the Word of God to survive. Just as the leaf needs abundant time in the sunshine to stay green, so do our spiritual lives need abundant time in the Word and in prayer. The color of the leaf reveals what is happening as it changes. Our lives and actions too will reflect our time with God and our time in the Word. What is your outer self revealing about you? Spiritual abundance from time with Him or apathy from indifference?
We are a new creation in Christ, the new has come and the old has passed away(2 Cor. 5:17). Let the new creation thrive as a green leaf warmed by the sunshine daily. Steep yourself in prayer with God and time in His Word. Do not let the old self continue to try and live on worldly standards that will never satisfy, and so, slowly turn colors as an autumn leaf, only to fall.
