YOUR FRUIT SAYS MUCH ABOUT YOU

A music video classic from 1990 came to mind as I thought about the sermon from last Sunday on Biblical fruit and what grows, or doesn't, on the branches of our lives…

Commands in the Bible are not merit for salvation.

They are imperatives for bearing fruit.

We bear fruit to show our faith, not earn it.

We must bear good fruit. Many would recognize that bearing bad fruit is not a positive thing. Most would not hesitate to admit that. Yet, I believe many would say that bearing NO fruit is not that big of a deal. At least it’s not BAD fruit, right? I believe that way of thinking is in fact, fruit; the fruit of indifference. I would say many Christians fall into this category and do not realize it. These are the nominal Christians, or Christians by name only. They say they love Jesus and believe in him, but their lives reflect nothing of the sort. No priority or time for God and His will for them. Their bank ledger and calendar both would confirm as much.

Their fruit or lack thereof can often be a dead giveaway as to their eternal condition.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

-Matthew 7:21-23

This should be a wake-up call from Jesus himself.

There are folks who say they follow Christ but never live it out.

It has to be more than words...
