“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” - Psalm 1:2-3
As we head into summertime and leave the school year behind, schedules and routines begin to change, a little more time frees up. Perfect. What a wonderful time to begin to create the habit of getting into God’s Word and committing some to memory.
Perhaps you have friends you will keep in touch with over the summer break, so as to keep up with them and remain close. How is the friendship affected if you never speak over the break? God wants that relationship with you and he left you an entire book to help you get to know Him even more. He has so much to tell you through the Bible. How will you get to know Him without talking? What a beautiful relationship it can be. He is not simply a God of rules and ‘do not’s. He loves you and desires to be close.
So use this break to begin a wonderful journey of memorizing His word. Meditating on it day and night. Let your inner tree grow and I promise you will see fruit!
Start easy and don’t give up. You miss a day, okay, you get right back at it the next.
Why go to the work you ask? The Psalmists make it pretty clear about the benefits of God’s Word.
Perfect law, reviving the soul.
Sure testimony, making wise the simple.
Right precepts, rejoicing the heart.
Pure commandments, enlightening the eyes.
True rules, righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold.
Sweeter also than honey.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
Encourage yourself to begin the journey by reading through Psalm 119. Be inspired!
