LOOK TO THE UNSEEN
Wednesday Devo: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” – Matthew 7:24
The Bible makes it pretty clear. Build your life on obeying Christ and His words; abiding in Christ. When we abide in Christ, we glorify God(John 15:7-8). Every aspect of our lives should be built around giving God glory.
Straight from Jesus’ mouth to us - Loving the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength(Mark 12:30).
Paul writes to the unbelievers in Rome and how their root sin is exchanging glorifying God for the glorifying of anything else.
Believers are just as guilty of this at times as well (though repentance should follow). We exchange the glory of language God has given us, for the glory of crude talk, gossip, hurtful sarcasm, and foul jokes – ‘it’s only words, right’. We exchange the glory of God’s design for hard work and a time of rest, for the world’s glory of working non-stop for material gain – ‘success’. We exchange the glory of God’s material blessings meant to be shared, for the glory of making much of ourselves – ‘comfort’. We even exchange the glory of what He has done for us, for the glory of what we do for Him - 'service'. The list can go on for every single one of us.
Hopefully we see this as a sort of test for ourselves.
Do we give God the glory for the stuff, time, money, relationships, knowledge, skills, etc., he has blessed us with? It’s intended purpose.
Or are we using these things for our own glory and glory according to the world’s standards? Glorifying the created and not the creator(Romans 1:25). Some will put these words into practice, bearing good fruit. Some will hear and ignore them, bearing bad fruit. Others will avoid them for fear of conviction, even though the knowledge of God is in everyone’s heart.
“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin” (James 4:17).
